With a view to serving the national Big Data Strategy and promoting the construction of Double First-Class disciplines, Nankai University established the School of Statistics and Data Science in May 2018 on the basis of the Institute of Statistics.

The Statistics Discipline at Nankai University can be dated back to the 1950s when Professor Zikun Wang (member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences) and Mr. Guoding Hu first founded the Probability and Statistics Discipline. In 1981, the Probability and Statistics Discipline became one of the first doctoral programs in China, and stayed as a national key second-tier discipline in the China Discipline Ranking in 1988, 2002 and 2007. In 2011, as the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council re-defined Statistics as a first-tier discipline, we were also among the first doctoral programs in Statistics, and ranked fourth nationwide in the 2012 China Discipline Ranking. In 2017, we were selected as a national “Double First-Class” discipline and ranked third in the Fourth China Discipline Ranking. In 2019, our undergraduate program in statistics entered the national First-Class Undergraduate Program Construction Project.

The School has 1 member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), 1 member of TWAS (The World Academy of Sciences for the Advancement of Science in Developing Countries), 1 national “Ten Thousand Talents Program” Leading Talent , 2 experts with the State Council government allowance, 1 young and middle-aged scientific and technological innovation leading researcher of the Ministry of Science and Technology, 2 national Top-notch Young Talent, 2 New Century Outstanding Talents; 1 member of the Board of Statistics Discipline of the Academic Committee of the State Council, 1 member of the National Statistics Advisory Board, 1 member of the Statistics Teaching Supervisory Committee of the Ministry of Education, 1 member of the MAS (Master in Applied Statistics) Education Supervisory Committee, 1 supervisor of national Top 100 Excellent Ph.D. Dissertations , 4 members of the Nankai University 100 Leading Talents Program. The faculty of the school has won 1 Municipal Natural Science First Award of Tianjin, 2 Municipal Youth Awards for Science and Technology of Tianjin, 1 Henry Fok (Huo, Yingdong) College and University Young Teachers’ Award (First Award) of the Ministry of Education, 2 National Bureau of Statistics Excellent Research Awards (First Award), 1 awardee and 1 nominee of the national Top 100 Excellent Ph.D. Dissertations

Adhering to the philosophy of “Discipline Development, Talent Cultivation and Integration”, the School focuses on statistical theories and methods to stimulate the development of data science. Based on Statistics, the School conducts in-depth cross-disciplinary cooperation, so as to enhance our influence and better serve the society.
